Hailing from Vancouver, British Columbia, Luca has emerged as one of the Western Hockey League’s premier offensive defensemen with the Portland Winterhawks. His path to success has been defined by perseverance and resilience, particularly after going unselected in the 2019 WHL Draft. Undeterred, Luca’s relentless determination earned him a roster spot in Portland, where he quickly established himself as a dynamic and impactful presence from the blue line.

During the 2022–23 season, Luca delivered a breakout performance, recording 17 goals and 47 assists for 64 points in 67 games. His 17-goal campaign placed him in elite company, as only three WHL defensemen over the past decade have reached that mark in their NHL draft season—underscoring the rarity of his offensive production and the strength of his upside. Luca’s talent has been recognized on multiple stages, including his selection to Team White at the 2023 CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game.

His journey reached another milestone when the San Jose Sharks selected him in the fourth round (123rd overall) of the 2023 NHL Draft.

Luca continued to break new ground by becoming the first defenseman from his draft class to make his NHL debut, doing so on March 20, 2025.
